Golden Monkey Trekking

Trekking Golden Monkeys

The endangered golden monkeys of the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda offer a unique trekking experience. These playful creatures are found in the bamboo forests set high up in the park, so expect a fairly lengthy uphill trek to around 7000 to 9000 feet above sea level to find them. That said, however, it will definitely be worth the effort.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park is home to two groups of these primates, each with a population nearing close to 100 members of varying ages, including babies. Experienced wildlife guides know the locations where these troops are likely to be found and will guide you expertly towards your destination. Once located, you can spend up to an hour with these energetic creatures, observing them as they go about their varied daily routine. Again much like the gorillas in the area, they are incredibly used to having humans come and visit them and will carry on as if you and your companions are not even there. And they are active! Expect to see much frolicking between the trees and bamboo as they perform a host of swinging and hanging tricks! These monkeys love to put on a show for their human visitors! This, however, makes them fairly difficult to photograph, but from time to time, you will be able to snap a few as they take a breather from their physical activities.

Bear in mind, trekking to see golden monkeys is perhaps not as popular as the mountain gorilla trekking in the area, but it is the less strenuous of the activities, and will give a good idea of what to expect for a gorilla trek. Trek’s are conducted only once per day and depart early in the morning, a beautiful time to see the Volcanoes National Park as the African sun rises high up the sky.
